We gated through to the far end of the Council chambers, saving a few minutes’ walk. From there, we gated out to a field, followed by a patch of woods directly beside the docks. The sound of gunfire filled the air.

“I’m going to need a vacation after this week, Mouth. Any thoughts?” I asked as he just huffed, pulling out his signature twin MP5Ks, better known as 9mm funeral-home accelerators.

The quick gating had made me a little unfocused. We all took a moment to get caught up. And by “we,” I meant Phil and I. Petro was hovering in the tree line already with Mouth and Kristi. We joined them after a minute.

“I think we beat the Night Stalkers here, boss,” Petro said as we put in our communicators. Only Phil, Petro, and I had them. It was clear that Mouth didn’t like being left out.

A rustle in the bushes behind us gained our immediate attention. Turning around, we were met by four fully suited black figures. Large white squares with a circle and crucifix in the middle adorned their armored chest plates. The Order Society had been hiding in the bushes where we just happened to land.

The Order Society was an organization that was best summed up as a new-age version of the Knights Templar, a.k.a. Crusaders. In reality, they were a modern-day group of reasonable zealots sworn to protect humankind from the evils of magic. In some ways, current events had justified their existence, and after the Balance, one part of the accords had acknowledged their existence. As one of the Council’s regular members, Goolsby represented them, and had been vital in their inclusion. Rumor also had it he was still one of the senior leaders of the group.

These were the men and women that handled things if the magical world broke the rules against mankind. This included protecting certain aspects of society, such as artifacts and locations of significant importance.

“Hey, guys, super neat outfits. It looks like these bushes were already occupied. We can find some others?” I said as a silver-infused electrified net shot out from the far end of the group. A tall man had walked up, pointing the long tube holding the magic-grounding net. Normal silver was enough to shut most magic types down. Electrified silver would just make us drop on the ground drooling.

The wonderful thing about ogres was that they were uncommonly large. As the first net shot out, another foot soldier on the far end turned to point his at Mouth. The shot lost its coverage, bouncing off Mouth’s back, who was holding back and had yet to shoot anything, much to my surprise.

I was fully under the first net, as was Kristi. Phil was down but had managed to punch a hole in the ground large enough to drop into. By the feeling underfoot, he was about to generate a whole new version of Tremors.

I looked over to see Mouth pulling up his weapons as the other two soldiers began moving.
